A family trip took me to the beautiful Hall of Liberation near Kelheim (Bavaria/Germany)

King Ludwig I. of Bavaria (1786-1868) had the Hall of Liberation built as a memorial in honour of the military struggles against Napoleon in 1813-1815 and German independence.
Friedrich Gärtner began with the planning of the monument in 1842. After his death leo von Klenze changed the design, completing the building in 1863. It combines ideas from ancient architecture with a technically innovative construction. The exterior of the central building is decorated with 18 colossal statues wich represent the "Germanic tribes". Inside the colorful, ceremonial hall, 45 metres high and dome-vaulted, are 34 marble Goddesses of Victory with hands linked to a form a circle. They symbolize the states of the Germand Federation which was founded in 1815. The open gallery high up on the exterior affords a magnificent view of the Danube and the Altmühl valley.
The historic significance of the Michelsberg where the Hall of Liberation stands is underlinded by the remains of extensive fortifications in particular the "Keltenwall" (Celtic rampart) wich can be seen near the visitors´centre.

Friedrich Gärtner begann 1842 mit der Planung des Monuments. Nach dessen Tod verwirklichte Leo von Klenze bis 1863 eine neue Konzeption. Sie vereint antike Baugedanken mit technisch inoovativer Konstruktion.
Den Zentralbau schmücken außen 18 kolossale Statuen, die die deutschen Volksstämme represäntieren. Im inneren der farbenprächtig-festlichen, 45 Meter hohen Kuppelhalle reichen sich 34 marmorne Siegesgöttinnen die Hände zu einem feierlichen Reigen. Sie symbolisieren die Staaten des 1815 gegründeten Deutschen Bundes. Von der Höhe des äußeren Umgangs eröffnet sich ein grandioser Rundblick auf Donau und Altmühltal. Auf die geschichtssträchtige Lage der Befreiunshalle auf dem Michelsberg verweisen Reste der Befreiungsanlage, am eindrucksvollsten noch der "Keltenwall" nahe dem Besucherzentrum.
